The bombshells just keep coming this week. The latest jaw-dropping news to break is that Donald Trump and his transition team were warned about Michael Flynn weeks before the inauguration. Flynn himself told Trump that he was under federal investigation for his work as a lobbyist for Turkey. But Trump hired him as his National Security Adviser anyway.
Despite this warning, which came about a month after the Justice Department notified Mr. Flynn of the inquiry, Mr. Trump made Mr. Flynn his national security adviser. The job gave Mr. Flynn access to the president and nearly every secret held by American intelligence agencies.
Mr. Flynn’s disclosure, on Jan. 4, was first made to the transition team’s chief lawyer, Donald F. McGahn II, who is now the White House counsel. That conversation, and another one two days later between Mr. Flynn’s lawyer and transition lawyers, shows that the Trump team knew about the investigation of Mr. Flynn far earlier than has been previously reported.
Hiring Flynn was one of Trump’s biggest mistakes so far. His legal woes have plagued the Trump administration for months now. Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates and even President Obama warned Trump that hiring Flynn would be a mistake because he was compromised by the Russians. But Trump never listens to anyone’s advice. Flynn ended up resigning as national security adviser after only 24 days.
Flynn is currently under investigation for his Russian ties and his possible role in helping the Trump campaign collude with Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. He has sought immunity in exchange for testifying in front of the House and the Senate, but so far neither has taken him up on this offer.
The news that Trump knew Flynn was under federal investigation when he hired him comes amid the darkest days of Trump’s presidency, with the story breaking just hours after the Department of Justice announced that special counsel had been appointed to handle the Russia investigation.
